For this body of work, I used gouache on rough watercolor paper which was torn and deckled into circles by hand. The motif used in these artworks is inspired by coral.

Before beginning a painting, I create several small color studies. These paintings are an exageration of those studies. Normally, I spend more time planning a painting than actually painting it. However, this work, created for CSA, has allowed me to become less rigid in my approach. These paintings are part of a transition as I move towards greater experimentation in my art.


James Wine is an artist born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. Wine graduated from the College of Charleston in 2012 with a BFA in Studio Arts. He currently works at Artist & Craftsman.
